Everything in the archive, arranged by subject. The four mixed galleries hold the photographs that did not belong to a single theme.
Four galleries of photographs that do not belong to a single place or subject: sunsets, night views, canals and street scenes.
Worsley Delph, the city centre on a summer afternoon, the sun going down over the airfield, and a street in Ancoats.
A weathered fence post in a field, and the full moon rising over an industrial plant with its steam plume lit from below.
A canal cutting with a mill chimney, the sun setting behind the Manchester skyline, and a sunset over the sea.
City lights deliberately blurred into trails, and a round hay bale silhouetted against the last of the sunset.
The city from the air, after dark, street by street and as it was rebuilt.
Concorde, the Red Arrows, Barton Aerodrome, police aircraft, helicopters and military visitors.
How the canal was built, what it carried, and the locks and bridges that made it work.
The Manchester Docks before and after: the Lowry, the Imperial War Museum North and the Erie Basin.
John O’Groats, Dunnet Head, Duncansby Head and the coast of the far north.
The Three Graces, the Albert Dock and the Mersey Ferries, and how the Ship Canal changed the city.
The house, the Old Mill, the water wheel and the stable block, south of Altrincham.
Aircraft photography, night exposures, working from the air and photographing a changing city.
The four mixed galleries are the oldest part of this archive. They were the first thing that went online, in 2001, before the site had been organised into subject sections, and they hold whatever did not fit anywhere else: sunsets, night photographs, a canal, a fence post. They have been kept as they were rather than merged into the themed sections, because that is what they are.
Photographs are now also grouped by subject — Manchester, aviation, the Ship Canal and the far north — which is a better way to find a particular picture. If you are looking for something specific, the sitemap lists every page in the archive.
Every photograph on this site was taken by Phill Rawlins between 2001 and 2004 unless the caption says otherwise. Clicking any image opens a larger version. For permission to reproduce anything, see the contact page.
