Photographs

A narrow canal cutting between brick walls with a mill chimney on the skyline
A canal cutting. Still water, brick retaining walls and a mill chimney beyond. Canals built for industry, photographed as somewhere quiet. See the Manchester Ship Canal for the version built a century later and thirty feet wider.
The sun setting behind the Manchester skyline, seen from a high vantage point
Sunset behind the skyline. The sun going down behind the city’s towers, seen across the roofs of the industrial buildings between the camera and the centre.
The sun setting over the sea beyond a rocky shore and a distant headland
Sunset over the sea. The sun dropping to the horizon beyond a rocky shore, with a headland away to the west. Coastal sunsets like this need the right lens and a steady surface more than they need a long exposure.

Missing from this gallery. Further sunset photographs accompanied these in the original gallery. Those files were not captured by the Internet Archive.

About mixed images 3

This is one of four galleries holding photographs that do not belong to a single place or subject. They date from the earliest period of this site, before the photographs were organised into sections, and they have been kept together for that reason.

If you are looking for a particular subject, the themed sections are easier to browse: Manchester, aviation, the Manchester Ship Canal, Salford Quays, Caithness and Liverpool.
