Frequently asked questions

Questions about dates, rights, missing material and how the archive was rebuilt.

When and where were these photographs taken?

Between 2002 and 2004, mostly within an hour of Manchester. The Concorde photographs were taken at Manchester International Airport on 22 and 31 October 2003 and at Heathrow on 24 October 2003. The Red Arrows displays were at Morecambe on 14 September 2003 and Southport on 6 September 2003. The aerial photographs were flown in 2002 and 2003.

Can I use a photograph from this site?

Photographs remain the copyright of Phill Rawlins. Linking to a page is always fine. For reuse, personal and student projects are usually fine with a credit and a link back; publication and commercial use need permission first. Email with the details and you will get a straight answer.

Why are some sections quite short?

Because that is how much material exists. This is a personal archive, not a commercial picture library, and a section such as Liverpool has only a handful of photographs because the photographer only visited a handful of times. Pages have been left honestly thin rather than padded out.

What happened to the Concorde sound recordings?

The original Concorde page linked to three WAV files: the aircraft departing Manchester on 22 October 2003, and two recordings of Heathrow air traffic control from 24 October 2003. Those files were never captured by the Internet Archive and no copy survives, so the links have been removed and the page explains what used to be there.

Why did some pages show a 404 error?

Six pages — Around Barton, A Brief History of Barton Aerodrome, Rescue and Fire Fighting Services, Changing Manchester, Around Eccles & Barton and Around Manchester — were linked from the site but had not been finished when the original server closed. They served a placeholder message instead of content. All six have now been written properly, using the material and images that exist in the archive.

Is this site connected to Manchester Airport or to any police force?

No. It is an independent photography archive with no connection to Manchester Airports Group, Greater Manchester Police, Merseyside Police, West Yorkshire Police, the Royal Air Force or British Airways. Aircraft and units are described as they appeared at the time; nothing here is official information.

How do I find a photograph of a particular aircraft?

Search the registration, such as G-BOAC or G-YPOL, and the page containing it will come up. Alternatively start from the aviation index, which groups the aircraft pages by type, or use the site index.

Does the site use cookies or track me?

No. There are no cookies, no analytics, no advertising and no third party requests of any kind. Every file on every page is served from this domain, which also means the site works offline once you have saved it.

The original site used .htm addresses. Why do these end in .html?

The archive was captured with .html file extensions and those addresses are the ones kept, so nothing that has been indexed breaks. Server rules also redirect the old .htm addresses to the matching .html page, so both continue to work.

Can I get a print of a photograph?

Possibly, for some images. The originals vary in resolution: files with an -sm suffix are web sized, while the full versions are larger. Ask about the specific photograph you have in mind.

Still stuck?

If your question is not answered here, send it over. Questions about specific aircraft, locations or dates are welcome and usually get a reply.
